A guard’s shoe, built from a guard’s game

Most first signature shoes are a silhouette with a name on it. The Caitlin 1 reads like the opposite – a shoe that starts from a specific problem. Clark’s game happens a long way from the basket, and a shooter who works that far out needs two things a standard guard shoe does not prioritise: a base that stays planted through a quick release, and enough court feel to trust the footwork that gets her into the shot in the first place.

What that means underfoot

Signature models for shooters tend to get built wide and stable rather than low and fast, and that is the direction here. The result is a shoe that feels secure when you plant and turn, which matters more for a pull-up game than straight-line speed does. It is also why the Caitlin 1 works as a general-purpose basketball shoe rather than a specialist piece – stability is useful to almost every player.

The off-court half

The signature line does not stop at the shoe. The apparel that came with it – fleece hoodies and pants in the same colour language – is straightforward Nike fleece with Clark’s name on it, which is exactly what most people want from that part of a signature deal. If you are buying to wear rather than to play, the apparel is the easier purchase and the sizing is standard Nike.

Before you buy

• Fit. True to size for most people. If you are between sizes and playing in them, go up – the upper does not stretch much.
• Court or street. The traction is built for an indoor floor. Wearing them outdoors will grind the outsole down quickly.
• Availability. First signature models in a debut colourway are the pairs that get scarce first. Restocks happen, but not on a schedule.
